What is a Merchant Identification Number (MID)?

A Merchant Identification Number (MID) is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric identifier assigned to a merchant by their payment processor or acquiring bank. This number is used to identify the merchant's account and track associated transactions. Each MID is associated with specific business details such as the business name, location, and type of services or products offered.

Why does Catch require MIDs?

Enabling Catch for earning and redemption at checkout requires no technical lift on your end. The experience is enabled via the provided MID(s).

How to find your MID(s)

Identifying your MID(s) is typically very easy. There are a number of ways you can do this:

  • Payment processor statement: The monthly statement from your processor typically includes the MID. It can often be found on the first page along with other account details.
  • Merchant portal: Many payment processors provide an online portal where merchants can log in and view their account details, including their MID.
  • Customer support: Merchants can contact their payment processor’s customer support to request their MID.
  • Bank statements: Sometimes, the MID can be found within the descriptions of your business account. Be sure that it is the full 15-digit alphanumeric identifier and not a truncated version.

Do you have more than one MID?

Many businesses operate with a single MID. Here are a few reasons a merchant may have multiple MIDs:

  • The business operates from more than one location (This may include pop up POS system.)
  • The business is segmented to differentiate transactions and effectively manage accounts
  • Payment processors may assign multiple identifiers for risk mitigation
  • The business may work with multiple processors

Changing your MID(s)

If one or more of your MIDs changes, please notify Catch via [email protected] as soon as possible to ensure an uninterrupted rewards experience for your users.
